Slipping in Polls, Donald Trump Warns of ‘Stolen Election’

Donald J. Trump has lashed out at fellow Republicans, calling them “disloyal” and “far more difficult” than Hillary Clinton.
He has griped openly about a “rigged” political system, saying Wednesday that he has “no respect” for the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, and previously complaining about a “defective” microphone in the first debate.
And on Monday, at a rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he worried that the election could be “stolen” from him and singled out Philadelphia, a city with a large African-American population, warning, “We have to make sure we’re protected.”
Mr. Trump’s ominous claims of a “stolen election” — which he often links to black, urban neighborhoods — are not entirely new. But in recent days, he has been pressing the theme with a fresh intensity, citing everything from the potential for Election Day fraud to news media bias favoring Mrs. Clinton to rigged debates.
The assertions — which coincide with Mr. Trump’s decline in the polls after a shaky performance in the first debate and accusations that he forced himself on women — highlight concerns that he may not accept a Clinton victory, breaking from the traditional decorum of defeated presidential candidates and undermining the legitimacy of the election result.
At rallies in recent days, Mr. Trump has become a candidate full of excuses, perhaps the clearest manifestation of his frustration with his current standing in the polls and the growing alarm in his campaign that a White House victory is slipping away.
On Monday, on a trip through Pennsylvania, Mr. Trump began the day urging the almost entirely white crowd outside Pittsburgh to show up to vote, warning about “other communities” that could hijack his victory.

“So important that you watch other communities, because we don’t want this election stolen from us,” he said. “We do not want this election stolen.”
Later, at the evening rally in Wilkes-Barre, Mr. Trump raised more concerns about voting fraud. “I just hear such reports about Philadelphia,” he said. “I hear these horror shows, and we have to make sure that this election is not stolen from us and is not taken away from us.”
He added for emphasis: “Everybody knows what I’m talking about.”
The crowd chanted an anti-CNN epithet as Mr. Trump attacked the “crooked media.”
At a rally in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Thursday, Mr. Trump said that, “This election will determine whether we remain a free nation or only the illusion of democracy,” suggesting that the system was “in fact controlled by a small handful of global special interests, rigging the system.” He continued, “And our system is rigged.”
The country has not had a presidential candidate from one of the two major parties try to cast doubt on the entire democratic process and system of government since the brink of the Civil War, said Douglas Brinkley, a presidential historian at Rice University.
“I haven’t seen it since 1860, this threat of delegitimizing the federal government, and Trump is trying to say our entire government is corrupt and the whole system is rigged,” Mr. Brinkley said. “And that’s a secessionist, revolutionary motif. That’s someone trying to topple the apple cart entirely.”

Roger J. Stone Jr., a close confidant and informal adviser to Mr. Trump, has also highlighted fears of election rigging. In an August column in The Hill, he wrote of voting machine manipulation. And during a panel Saturday at this year’s New Yorker Festival, as he discussed the possibility of such tampering, Mr. Stone hedged when asked whether he would advise Mr. Trump — should he lose in November — to concede the election and accept its legitimacy.
“As long as there is no irrefutable evidence of fraud, yes,” he told his questioner. “He should — unless there is any refutable evidence to the contrary.”
Mr. Stone is one of the people behind Stop The Steal, a movement of 500 volunteers who plan to stand outside what they believe could be “suspect precincts” on Election Day and conduct their own exit polls to compare against voting machine results.
“In an election in which Donald Trump has made it pretty clear that the Clintons are going to prison, I think they would do anything to make sure they win it, even steal it,” Mr. Stone said. But, he added, “Trump cannot just lose and say, ‘They stole it.’ He has to have some tangible evidence — and that’s exactly what we’re trying to collect.”
Democrats fear that Mr. Trump’s accusations, in the short term, will lead to voter suppression — and, in the long term, could encourage huge swaths of Americans to view Mrs. Clinton as an illegitimate president if she is elected.
“He’s using phrases like ‘rigged election’ to incite his followers to rig the election by using tactics like voter intimidation, and I don’t think it’s particularly subtle, and I don’t think he cares about the integrity of our elections,” said Stacey Abrams, the Democratic minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives.
Ms. Abrams, who is African-American and has worked on voting-rights issues, is also the founder of the New Georgia Project, a voter registration and engagement effort in the state. She said Mr. Trump was employing a “voter intimidation model.”
“Just scare them away from the polling place,” she said. “That’s his crude form of voter suppression — not particularly artful, but effective.”

Latest Election Polls 2016

The Clinton campaign is stressing to supporters that they expect voter participation to be higher and easier than in previous elections — but it has also begun recruiting election lawyers to help with voter protection efforts.
“We are prepared for anything in terms of how he chooses to conduct himself in the closing weeks of this campaign, and that includes what is increasingly looking like a scorched-earth approach,” said Brian Fallon, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign. “He is clearly trying to lay a foundation for challenging the legitimacy of the potential next president, just as he sought to do with the nation’s first African-American president.”
With less than a month until the election, Mr. Trump’s grievances has come fast and furious as he has begun to slip again in the polls.
On Thursday, Mr. Trump also asserted, without offering evidence, that the Obama administration was allowing illegal immigrants to enter the country to vote in November, another example of how he claimed the election was being rigged. “They’re letting people pour into the country so they can go and vote,” Mr. Trump said at a meeting in New York with the National Border Patrol Council, the union of border patrol agents.
There has been no evidence that the administration is delaying deportations of — or intentionally letting in — immigrants so they can vote. (Illegal immigrants are barred from voting in federal elections.)
Mr. Trump’s claims seem to be resonating among his supporters. At a campaign stop in Iowa on Tuesday, a woman stood up and, her voice quavering, said she feared “voter fraud” before offering a stark call to action to Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana, Mr. Trump’s running mate.
“If Hillary Clinton gets in, I myself, I’m ready for a revolution because we can’t have her in,” the woman said.
Mr. Pence has emerged as Mr. Trump’s most loyal defender. But the call to revolt was a step too far for him. “Yeah, don’t say that,” he said, shaking his right hand as if to try to brush away her comment.
He then tried for a more positive spin: “There’s a revolution coming on November the 8th,” he said. “I promise you.”

John Podesta Twitter account HACKED!

The Twitter account belonging to John Podesta, the chairman of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, appears to have been briefly hijacked Wednesday afternoon.
John Podesta: PROMISECRIB'
John Podesta

A now-deleted tweet posted to the account announced that Podesta had switched allegiance and encouraged his followers to vote instead for Donald Trump, Clinton's Republican rival in the US election. The tweet was quickly deleted but not before it was retweeted 195 times.
It wasn't clear who was behind the apparent hack. Representatives for the Clinton campaign did not immediately respond to a request for more information on the matter.
Podesta was a frequent figure in headlines last weekend after controversial website WikiLeaks published what appeared to be emails from a private account belonging to Podesta. The emails, which have not been confirmed as authentic, contain what seem to be excerpts from paid speeches Clinton gave to Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street firms.

“I know it’s a campaign, but this isn’t about politics,” Michelle Obama said in a speech in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Thursday afternoon, as she responded to the latest news of Donald Trump’s treatment of women. “It’s about basic human decency. It’s about right and wrong.” She spoke with a passion that many feel, but few can deploy with such controlled, incisive force. And yet her speech was very much about politics—politics as the enterprise that the sordidness of this election may lead many to give up on, politics as a national inheritance, and politics as an ethical choice.

Obama started with what she had wanted to spend the last few months of her tenure as First Lady talking about: Let Girls Learn, an initiative for girls’ education. She had been inspired by the girls she’d met a couple of days earlier at a White House event; she had been feeling pretty good. “That was Tuesday,” she said, and the audience knew what she meant: it was before reports came out in which women talked about what it was like to have Donald Trump kiss and grab them against their will. And the audience had heard Trump call the women and the media outlets that printed what they said liars. This was in addition to an “Access Hollywood” video that came out Friday. Obama described watching that, too. “I can’t believe that I’m saying that”—she stopped, her voice catching—“a candidate for President of the United States has bragged about sexually assaulting women.” It was at this moment that her speech became something extraordinary.

“And I have to tell you that I can’t stop thinking about this. It has shaken me to my core in a way that I couldn’t have predicted,” the First Lady said. “So while I’d love nothing more than to pretend like this isn’t happening, and to come out here and do my normal campaign speech, it would be dishonest and disingenuous to me to just move on to the next thing like this was all just a bad dream.” Making normal campaign speeches is her job, but she was also describing the impulse that many Americans might have to just go about their normal jobs and pretend that this ugly moment isn’t happening, that this is indeed just a bad dream. But, Obama continued, it’s not so simple.

“This is not something that we can ignore. It’s not something we can just sweep under the rug as just another disturbing footnote in a sad election season,” she said. People were afraid to let their children watch a Presidential candidate on television—“a powerful individual speaking freely and openly about sexually predatory behavior.” That is another way of saying that politics was being made into a center of pain. Recounting Trump’s words, she said, “It is cruel. It’s frightening. And the truth is, it hurts. It hurts.” It reminded people of “stories we heard from our mothers and grandmothers,” about how hard work was never enough to protect a woman or to allow her to advance. That, too, fed the impulse to run away from politics—to shut it out. “Maybe we’re afraid to be that vulnerable,” Obama said. “Maybe we don’t want to believe that there are still people out there who think so little of us as women.”

But, she said, believe it. “New Hampshire, be clear: This is not normal. This is not politics as usual. This is disgraceful. It is intolerable. And it doesn’t matter what party you belong to—Democratic, Republican, independent—no woman deserves to be treated this way. None of us deserves this kind of abuse.”

She added, “I can tell you that the men in my life do not talk about women like this. And I know that my family is not unusual.” It is unusual, in that her husband is the President—but the point was that there are still decent people in the political realm, something that many Americans have begun to doubt. She was married to one, and she said she knew another.

“Strong men—men who are truly role models—don’t need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful,” she said. And then, setting up the transition to the person she had come to campaign for, she added, “People who are truly strong lift others up. People who are truly powerful bring others together. And that is what we need in our next President. And let me tell you, I’m here today because I believe with all of my heart that Hillary Clinton will be that President.” Obama spoke not just of Clinton’s competence but of her character, in familial terms: “And, if any of us had raised a daughter like Hillary Clinton, we would be so proud. We would be proud.” In her speech at the Democratic National Convention, Obama had said that she trusted Clinton to protect her daughters; here, she went beyond that, saying, in effect, that she would be glad if Sasha and Malia were not only kept safe by Clinton but became someone like her.

A Trump victory, Obama said, would mean that “we’re telling all our kids that bigotry and bullying are perfectly acceptable in the leader of their country. How can we maintain our moral authority in the world? How can we continue to be a beacon of freedom and justice and human dignity?”

She had an answer. “We have everything we need to stop this madness. You see, while our mothers and grandmothers were often powerless to change their circumstances, today, we as women have all the power we need to determine the outcome of this election.” The audience, as it had at several points during the speech, applauded wildly. “We have knowledge. We have a voice. We have a vote.”

Michelle Obama is working as hard as anyone in this country to get Hillary Clinton elected. After eight years in Washington, she hasn’t given up on politics. And that’s its own victory.

Storm Death Toll in North Carolina Rises to 20

The Latest on flooding after Hurricane Matthew (all times local):
5 a.m.
Gov. Pat McCrory said the death toll in North Carolina from Hurricane Matthew has risen to 20.
McCrory told a briefing in Lumberton on Wednesday that the latest death was reported in Lenoir County. He provided no additional details.
The death toll for the U.S. now stands at 36.
The governor was visiting one of the areas hit hard by flooding, but he called the residents in Robeson County "the most resilient citizens I have ever met."
McCrory said people hoping to travel through the area should avoid Interstate 95 because a portion of the road is flooded, and he suggested finding alternate routes.
3:10 p.m.
Water has started to flood homes in a North Carolina town founded by freed slaves that was destroyed in flooding in Hurricane Floyd 17 years ago.
Footage from WRAL-TV's helicopter on Wednesday afternoon showed water up to the porches of many homes Princeville.
Authorities hoped a levee built after Floyd's floods in 1999 might save the town from the Tar River, swollen by 9 inches of rain over the weekend from Hurricane Matthew. But they went ahead and evacuated Princeville, warning residents water might get around the structure.
In the 1999 floods, much of the town founded in 1865 sat under up to 11 feet of water for nine days.
Emergency officials in Edgecombe County didn't answer the phone Wednesday afternoon.
9:55 a.m.
Gov. Pat McCrory says more damage is still to come for many people in the eastern part of North Carolina as the state faces its ninth day of Hurricane Matthew's aftermath.
He also said the state's death toll from the storm has risen to 19.
At a news conference Wednesday in Raleigh, McCrory said serious flooding is heading downstream even though the weather now looks beautiful.
He said many people are hurting, living in shelters and preparing for major flooding. The governor says major flood issues remain in Robeson County.
The governor is especially worried about the Tar River in Greenville and the Neuse River in Goldsboro.
Four counties have been added to the federal disaster declaration: Bertie, Wayne, Johnston and Wilson counties.
The number of power outages in the state has dropped to 143,000.
6:25 a.m.
Flooding across eastern North Carolina is still expected to get worse before it gets better.
The National Weather Service says the Tar River in Greenville was at nearly 23 feet. It's expected to reach 25 feet late Thursday night or early Friday.
The airport in Greenville was flooded and officials ordered the evacuation of about one tenth of the city's 90,000 people. East Carolina University is closed for the rest of the week.
The Neuse River in Kinston is also still rising and is expected to peak Saturday. The weather service says the flooding is comparable to that of Hurricane Floyd in 1999.
Forecasters say all roads on the south side of Kinston will be flooded.
Flooding was also reported in Fayetteville. Forecasters say moderate flooding is occurring and conditions aren't expected to get better before Friday morning.
3 a.m.
Homeowners, students and businesses in one of eastern North Carolina's population centers are keeping a nervous watch on the river that flows along downtown, as Hurricane Matthew's deadly after-effects lingered days after the storm passed.
Authorities ordered evacuations for about one-tenth of Greenville's 90,000 people. The Tar River is expected crest Wednesday.
Military trucks rumbled through leafy neighborhoods Tuesday where orange traffic cones and police tape discouraged people from entering. Police officers were stationed at the edge of the evacuation zone to monitor who came and went.
David Baker, whose family owns the River Bank Apartments, said all but one of their tenants had heeded the evacuation order by Tuesday, and he was spending the afternoon putting boards and sealant across the doorways of ground-floor units.

Divorce is no laughing matter — except of course when it’s used as a punchline.
In order to find the lighter side of a bad situation, we rounded up some of the funniest divorce- and breakup-themed comics the Internet has to offer.
After all, they say laughter is the best medicine.

Here are the latest developments in the brangelina divorce Sections

As Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s divorce drama continues, new facts continue to emerge with regard to the split, as well as how the custody battle surrounding their six children has impacted the stars.
From the federal investigation into Pitt to the current status of both parties’ ongoing legal dealings, here are four things ET has learned about the former power couple’s high-profile breakup.
1. It’s unlikely Pitt and Jolie have been speaking
In the wake of child abuse allegations leveled against Pitt, the Department of Children and Family Services reportedly implemented a child safety plan. ET confirms that, given the safety plan, it’s unlikely the 52-year-old star has been in contact with Jolie directly, as any communication would likely need to go through both parties’ attorneys.
2. The federal investigation remains open
ET confirms that the federal criminal investigation into child abuse claims is still ongoing, despite some reports to the contrary, and that the FBI has not yet interviewed members of the family during the course of its investigation. The FBI tells ET that it is “continuing to gather facts and will evaluate whether an investigation at the federal level will be pursued.”
3. Jolie’s brother is not the caretaker of the kids
Regarding tabloid reports that Jolie’s brother, James Haven, has been serving as a caretaker for the pair’s six children, ET has learned the claims aren’t true. Give the tumultuous nature of the divorce, many friends and family are contributing their time to help and visit with the kids, including Haven, but claims that he’s the children’s caretaker are inaccurate. He’s simply one of many people close to the family who are assisting during this difficult time.
4. It is still unclear if Pitt has seen the kids
A recent report that Pitt saw his children last week, for the first time since Jolie filed for divorce on Sept. 19, is incorrect. However, it’s still unclear if the actor has seen his children at all, or if he is likely to anytime soon.
Pitt and Jolie agreed to a temporary custody deal at the end of last month, which is in effect until Oct. 20. Sources tell ET Jolie and Pitt each volunteered to participate in individual counseling, and Pitt also agreed to undergo drug and alcohol testing, though he was not required to.

FINALLY: Buhari reacts to arrest of judges by DSS, speaks on democracy.

– The presidency has denied that it is attacking the judiciary following th arrest of some judges by the DSS – The president’s spokesperson clarified that the DSS had warrants to arrest the judges – Garba Shehu said the president and the DSS have acted based on the provision of the constitution The presidency has reacted to the clampdown on allegedly corrupt judges by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS). The raid on the judges was carried out in the early hours of Saturday, October 8 in some parts of the country. The arrest of the judges followed a petition that they allegedly received bribes from Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state. It was learnt that the Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC) had knowledge of the DSS action. President Muhammadu Buhari has been criticised for the unprecedented action of the DSS with the Peoples Democratic Party describing the president as a dictator worse that the late General Sani Abacha. However, in a statement Garba Shehu who is the senior special adviser to the president on media and publicity, he said the Buhari was not targDieting the judiciary but clamping down on corruption. He also clarified that search warrants were obtained for the arrest of the allegedly corrupt judges.
Read the statement below:
The Presidency assures that the President reserves his highest respect for the institution of the judiciary as the third arm of government. To this end, the President will not do anything to undermine its independence. President Buhari remains a committed democrat, in words and in his action, and will not take any action in violation of the constitution. The recent surgical operation against some judicial officers is specifically targeted at corruption and not at the judiciary as an institution. In a robust democracy such as ours, there is bound to be a plurality of opinions on any given issue, but there is a convergence of views that the country has a corruption problem that needs to be corrected. But reports by a section of the media are giving us cause for concern. RIt is wrong to present this incident as a confrontation between the executive and judicial arms of government. The Presidency has received assurances from the DSS that all due processes of the law, including the possession of search and arrest warrants were obtained before the searches. To suggest that the government is acting outside the law in a dictatorial manner is to breach the interest of the state. Meanwhile, Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa urged the NBA to boycott all the courts in the country due to the overnight invasion of judges’ homes by the DSS. He said: “It is now a case of anarchists in power. The clampdown on judges has been on for a long time, through agents of government in the various institutions of oppression. “We are now back to the 1984 jackboot system of intolerance, where all dissenting views and opinions must be silenced. “It is condemnable for the DSS, which is an arm of the executive, to be breathing down on the judicial arm of government, under the guise of fighting corruption. “It is meant to silence the opposition and to cover the inefficiency and cluelessness of this administration,”
