SPORTS BRIEF: Barcelona targeting obscure Premier League striker

Barcelona have zeroed in on West Brom striker Salomon Rondon

It’s not every day that Barcelona show real interest in a Premier League striker. The La Liga giants trying to pick off a West Brom talent is an even more rare occurrence. That’s just what the club are rumored to be doing in relation to Baggies striker Salomon Rondon.
Barcelona have been searching for a backup striker for most of the summer transfer window with no success. It’s quite difficult to purchase a top-notch striker when they know they’ll be nailed to the bench behind the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar. That daunting challenge has forced Barcelona to look at less obvious transfer targets.
West Brom’s starting centre forward certainly qualifies as an off-the-radar prospect. Rondon has been a reasonably effective Premier League player, but quite frankly hasn’t been anything special. Barcelona’s interest in him is unconventional at best.
The idea behind the interest in Rondon centers more around the way he plays. He’s a big, physical bull inside the box and he’d give them a real Plan B. He lacks the skill of the club’s current attack force, but he can push around the opposition with brute force. His purchase would certainly provide them a different look off the bench.
West Brom fans don’t need to get too worked up about Barcelona’s interest in Rondon as of yet. The odds are still heavily against him leaving the Premier League for La Liga in the next several weeks. In fairness, Rondon is one of a number of strikers that Barcelona are monitoring at the current point in time. The club are also expressing interest in more conventional targets like Carlos Bacca or Ayoze Perez. Most of the other names on the list would be more straight-forward acquisitions.
